Cuando Matt Thiessen llamó desde Orlando (Florida), el martes por la tarde, lo primero que quería saber era cuanto frío hacia en Canton. Es bastante gracioso grabar canciones de navidad, cuando en verdad afuera hace calor. Al principio nosotros grabamos sólo 10 canciones pero seguimos añadiendo más, va a ser una cosa permanentemente continua.
Dane: Algunas de tus canciones originales de navidad tienen un toque de tristeza en ellos, lo cual muchas de las mejores canciones de fiestas también lo hacen.
Matt: Justamente estaba hablando de eso la otra noche en nuestro Show, en cómo la Navidad tiende a magnificar la alegría en nuestras vidas y en la carencia que hay de eso, Y como esto es algo que todos deberíamos tratar de enfrentar alrededor de las fiestas, esa tristeza.

Dane: ¿Cuál fue el mejor regalo que recibiste?
Matt: en un año recibi un aro de basketball. Fue una gran cosa para mí.

ENGLISH: INTERVIEW WITH DANE KANE & MATTHEW THIESSEN FROM RELIENT K
When Matt Thiessen phoned from Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday afternoon, the first thing he wanted to know was how cold it was in Canton. One senses that Thiessen, who has been touring the country with the successful pop-punk band Relient K since his late teens, is never far from home in his thoughts.
Relient K, for which the remarkably talented Thiessen is lead vocalist, chief songwriter, guitarist and keyboardist, will play a pair of intimate, acoustic Christmas-themed shows Tuesday and Wednesday at Musica in downtown Akron. The first show is for 21 and older, the second is all-ages.
The band’s Christmas album, “Let It Snow Baby ... Let It Reindeer,” released in 2007 but since updated on iTunes, is one of the yuletide season’s brightest collections. There are punked-up renditions of traditional carols (“Deck the Halls,” “12 Days of Christmas”), original songs both cheeky (“Santa Claus is Thumbing to Town,” “I Hate Christmas Parties”) and tender (“Merry Christmas, Here’s to Many More,” “I Celebrate the Day”), and some creamy vocal harmonies to rival the Beach Boys.
Here are highlights from my yuletide-themed chat with Matt.
Q. Your Christmas album is one of my very favorites. What can you tell me about it?
A. The whole thing started because Jessica, my little sis, was pretty obsessed with Christmas music when we were kids. The only things she’d listen to were the “Lion King” soundtrack or Christmas records. So we started recording Christmas songs so she’d have Relient K stuff to listen to.
Q. Just for her, seriously?
A. The original idea was to record old Christmas songs and give ’em away free with our third album. This was probably back in August 2004. It’s pretty funny recording Christmas songs when it’s real hot outside. We only recorded 10 songs at first but we keep adding more. It’s going to be an ongoing thing.
Q. Some of your original Christmas songs have a touch of sadness to them, which so many of the best holiday songs do.
A. I was just talking about that at our show the other night, how Christmas tends to magnify the joy in our lives, and the lack thereof, and how it’s something we should all try to deal with around the holidays, that sadness.
Q. Tell me about your Christmas shows in Akron next week.
A. We’re playing six or seven Christmas songs out of 18 songs total, and the whole set is fun. It’s acoustic with a little electric guitar, but pretty laid-back and I guess more mature. People seem to be digging all the shows so far.
Q. It’s cool you’re doing club shows in Akron, close to home.
A. We played Musica earlier this year, and we had the opportunity to do it again. We feel like we haven’t been playing Ohio enough the past few years.
Q. Do you have any vivid memories of Christmas morning from when you were a kid?
A. Hmmm, let me think. I was really little, probably first or second grade, and I didn’t have any money so the only thing I could afford to get my sister for Christmas was this huge can of Aqua Net hairspray. She opened her Christmas stocking first and she got a huge can of it from my mom. I got a little bummed about that.
Q. Awww. Did your sister have real big hair?
A. She had some teased, Afro-type stuff going on, which was pretty awesome. She’s a doctor now.
Q. What was the best Christmas gift you ever received?
A. I got a basketball hoop one year. It was a pretty big deal for me.
Q. Final gift question: What are you asking Santa for this year?
A. I like vinyl records.
Q. Where will you be spending Christmas this year?
A. I’ll be in Bolivar, Ohio. My brother is flying in from California with his wife and their two kids. It’s a big deal.
Q. So are you the only remaining original member of Relient K?
A. (Founding member Matt) Hoopes is still in the band for sure, he just hasn’t been touring with us. But he still shows up at practice, he’s been working at our record label, and he produced a new record for our opening band, Deas Vail, that’s really great. He’s been helping a bunch of different ways. It’s still a team. He talks about coming back and playing some shows. There’s always an open door for him. But to answer your question, I’m the only original guy on the road right now.
Q. Are you in touch with the other guys who’ve left, like Dave (Douglas) and Brian (Pittman)?
A. I keep up with them like you keep up with friends. I miss those guys, for sure.
Q. You turned 30 this year. What was that like? You’re such a boy.
A. It was interesting. It’s a funny number. I spend my life pretending I’m 19. I guess I need to prove to myself that I’m mature.
Q. How old do you feel?
A. The same as I did when I was 19. Maybe a little wiser. I still love to run around, throw a Frisbee, write songs, make records, play shows, the same things kids do.
